Why we advocate for healing and justice
We have been in your shoes. The traumas of a collision and brain injury have touched our immediate family. My family knows first-hand the pain of profound permanent injuries.
In 2001, I received the phone call that everyone dreads. My mom was in a motorcycle crash. She suffered a traumatic brain injury. She was admitted to the intensive care unit for days, hospitalized for weeks, and lived at a rehabilitation center for months after the crash. From seeing her unconscious in the hospital bed to watching her struggle to remember my name to helping her relearn to walk, the fear that she would never recover was paralyzing. My dad scrambled to pay bills while taking time from work to care for my mom. His worried face is still etched in my mind. After years of patience, rehabilitative therapies and treatment, my mom has achieved meaningful improvement in function. I refused to be a helpless bystander in my mom’s recovery, so I have made it my life mission to know the science behind traumatic brain injuries and PTSD and be her fiercest advocate.
